This has become a data-centric society, relying on real-time data and technology (i.e., cell phone, shopping online, social networking) more than ever. Although there are many advantages associated with the use of this data, there are concerns that the collection of massive amounts of data can lead to an invasion of privacy. In January, 2014, President Obama asked his staff to take the next 90 days to prepare a report for him on how big data is affecting people’s privacy. The big data report they created can be found here.
After reading the report, discuss your thoughts regarding the following:
• Do you feel the policy recommendations allow the public and private sectors to maximize the benefits of big data while minimizing the risk of privacy?
• Does the report accurately identify opportunities for big data to grow the economy, improve health and education, and make the United States safer and more energy-efficient?
