A consultant hired to give a recommendation to William Bonney, the CEO of the U.S. partner

Assume you are an outside consultant hired to give a recommendation to William Bonney, the CEO of the U.S. partner, MidWest Spindle how to proceed with request to its Chinese joint-venture. You know Bonney wants a clear and direct answer to the question “Can you recommend a specific course of action which you believe would, with a very high degree of certainty, enable the U.S. partner to achieve its objectives in the near term (i.e., within one year)?” If Bonney cannot achieve his objectives in that time period he wants to cut his losses and would like your recommendation as how to exit the joint-venture.

Bonney is an impatient, no nonsense who does not want his time wasted. Write him a brief (two pages single space as a maximum) memo (in form and substance) which gives him your conclusion and supports it through logic. Do NOT try to convince he needs to be more patient, or change or lower his objectives.

Your analysis should (i) explicitly identify the two primary interests of the US partner, (ii) explicitly identify the two primary interests of the Chinese partner, (iii) discuss the relationship between MidWest’s desire to modernize and automate the manufacturing process and the interests of the two parties, and (iv) with the final recommendation being based on your determination whether the differing interests are compatible or conflicting.

You know there are people who work for MidWest who have suggested the problem could be solved simply and quickly by (a) replacing Martin Grant as their local representative, (b) reducing the amount of money the joint-venture spends on banquets, or (c) MidWest selling its ownership interest to U.S. financial investors. If you disagree with those solutions, briefly explain why they would not be sufficient.

Any next steps would require negotiations with the Chinese partner. Please give Bonney whatever you believe are the TWO most important, concrete, valuable, useful etc. pieces of advice for his preparing to negotiate with a Chinese counterparty.
