The bottom line is that all of biology is based upon the chemistry of a group of elements that are found on Earth. So in order to understand the molecules that exist in organisms, we have to understand some basic chemistry. Otherwise, we will not be able to understand the fundamental biomolecules that exist in cells.

This unit will take you through the basic concepts of the chemistry that are necessary for this course. If you have already taken a full chemistry class, you will find that this section of the class will be relatively easy for you, and the materials will just provide a basic review. If you have not taken a chemistry class, the materials that are here will give you the basic understanding that you need to move forward.

I have only done one introductory Power Point lecture for this unit, and then I have posted a series of videos from YouTube that do a great job covering this material. The guy doing the videos is a little quirky, but he does a great job with the content. Between the videos and the reading in the textbook, you should be able to work your way through this material.

Here is the list of things you should do for this unit:

Download the Unit 3 Reading/study guide and the Chemistry for Biology worksheet. All of these should be completed as part of this unit.
Do the reading necessary to complete the sections of Reading/study guide,
Watch and take notes from the PowerPoint video that is the Introduction to Chemistry; this video can be accessed
Watch and take notes from the videos posted on the Chemistry for Biology Part 2 page (Atoms, Drawing Atoms, Ionic Bonds, Covalent Bonds)

Watch and take notes from the videos posted on the Properties of Water Page. Answer the study guide questions.

Chemistry for Biology Part 2
This series of short videos will introduce you to the chemistry concepts that you will need to understand to be successful in this class. If you combine this information with the Chapter 2 textbook reading, you should be able to answer all of the questions on the study guide and worksheet.

Properties of Water
One of the things that is important to biological systems is the role that water plays in the existance of life. This section of the unit will look at all of the different ways in which water supports living systems.
