1. How would you define Black feminism, based on the readings as we have contextualized and discussed them in the course? How would you define womanism? What is some of the history that informs these theories? What are some features, aims and examples of each, or if you find them indistinguishable, both? Cite at least two readings in your discussion.
  2. What are some ways in which Black women’s literature (and other creative expression, such as film and the blues) expressed an analysis of Black women’s conditions and possibilities for freedom? Using and citing one or more of the theories we have covered so far (intersectionality, Black feminism/s, womanism, Black girlhood), critically analyze two-three primary creative (fiction, poetry, musical) texts (by Black women) and what they communicate about the experiences, thought, and resistance of Black women and girls. Using the theory you choose as a guide, consider selecting one or a couple of main ideas (such as marriage within patriarchy, sensuality in nature, etc.), that the texts have in common, to focus your analysis. At least one primary text must be a fiction/poetry text that we covered in class. The second or third can be another primary creative text.
