Childish Gambino’s recent music video “This is America,” is part of a long legacy of the intersection of music, race, and politics. In this essay, refer to 2 different time periods where race, music, and politics intersected. How were the politics of the time imprinted on the music? What were the cultural, social, and political functions of the music? At minimum, your answer should incorporate significant musicians/performers, song lyrics, venues, and clear justification for your arguments throughout. Time periods should be at least 30 years apart. You are welcome to choose one time period that we have not yet covered in the course, but at least one time period must be from earlier course content.
