Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis can be used to test for genotypic vulnerability to diseases as well as many other traits. Embryos can be genetically tested prior to implantation into the uterus to help screen for undesirable characteristics. Most would agree that it seems reasonable to use such a procedure in cases where there is a high likelihood of genetic transmission of a fatal disease. On the other hand, most people are uncomfortable with the idea of genetically designing the ‘ideal’ offspring.
