Look at an area of interest and develop a research paper that extends beyond
the information provided in the textbook and course materials and focuses on how communication functions
in specific environments and formats. You might look at some of the communication theories about the
relationship between violence and mass media but focus on video gaming. Or you might look at the
development of romantic relationships in online social environments. You can consider expanding an
examination of verbal or non-verbal methods of communication, either working in conjunction with each
other or examining conflicts when signals are conflicting with either of them.
One important note is to recognize that communication is everywhere and is one of those things we are
engaging in all of the time in an interpersonal and intrapersonal manner. This allows for a wide variety of
topics and approaches, so use the textbook and course materials as a guide to jump start your thoughts
and work toward something of your interest.
Length: MINIMUM Seven pages, double-spaced, 12 font Times New Roman before source page. At least
six sources outside of the textbook/course materials, cited with attribution within the paper and on a
properly constructed source page. Since some of you may be in other areas of study, I don’t require APA
style – you are free to use the style most common in your own academic discipline.
Development hints: Most good research papers start out with a focused question or thesis about the subject
areas they want to explore. They organize their discussion around making a point, supporting that point with
information and/or evidence, and sometimes drawing some conclusions or using that point to build to the next one.
