Most, if not all of you have never committed a crime, but everyone has probably been in a situation where they had the opportunity but did not act on a criminal act. Why did you not (or do you not in general) commit crimes? Jeremy Bentham argued that we conduct a weighted analysis of pleasure and pain that referred to as the hedonistic calculus. Do you believe that you actually weight such costs or are there other reasons? Based on your response to this do you feel that the concept of “deterrence” regulates criminal behavior (be sure to include a brief discussion as to why you answer this last part the way that you do)
