Choose a key concept to write about from the following list: ideology, hegemony, intersectionality. You must use the Kellner article from the textbook, plus one of the following: Hall (article 11, main topic: ideology); Lull (article 4, main topic: hegemony); Hill Collins (on D2L, main topic: intersectionality). Choose second article based on the concept you are focusing on. ( i am choosing IDEOLOGY and using the HALL article. I will be sending the required textbook pages that have the information that you have to use.)
Using your own voice, critically reflect on and explore the concept you have selected (ideology, hegemony, or intersectionality) using the work of the two authors. Try not to summarize the readings, but rather engage with the theoretical ideas put forth by the authors. Make connections between them and discuss the significance/importance of their ideas. What are the connections and disconnections between the way these two authors articulate the concept? How and why does this concept matter? What can be done with it? Does it help you understand or articulate or re-examine media and images of inequality? You may also engage with the limitations of their ideas/arguments– what is missing? What is not discussed? You may use examples from media/popular culture, but the focus should be on the theoretical concept. As you write this critical reflection imagine your audience to be the instructor, your fellow classmates and even the authors you are responding to. Your short essay must address the readings in some capacity (I want to know that you have read the articles) and offer a critical engagement with the ideas offered.
