Current Issues Assignment

Your task is to Select from one of the topics below:
• Net Neutrality & Social Media: What the impact of the recent ruling from the FCC could mean
• Facebook & Cambridge Analytica: Personal privacy and social media
• Responsibility in the age of the social media celebrity: The Logan Paul Paradigm (to be clear, this does not just have to focus on the events that happened in Japan or Yosmite. Rather, the broader context of social media celebrities and how they act/promote ideas/actions (ir)responsibly should be the focus). As an alternate topic related to this issue, you could also discuss the responsibility that sites like YouTube should have in ensuring content is provided in accordance with its policies

Guidelines
• Length: Minimum 1000 words / Maximum 1100 words not including your reference page (view the rubric to understand the penalty for being over/under – it can have a big impact on your overall mark!)
• Format: Must be written in paragraph format. Font is to be 12 point, either Times New Roman or Arial for ease of reading. All text must be double spaced. Errors in format will be deducted at a rate of 1 mark per error.
• Sources & Citations: Must have at least 3 external sources cited which can include one of the articles provided
o In-text citations and reference list must be provided in APA format. Improperly formatted citations will have a 1 mark per error penalty applied. Missing in-text citations or failing to include a reference list will result in a mark of zero on this assignment as this would constitute a violation of the academic integrity standards. (See below for additional information).
• Spelling and grammar matter! Errors in spelling and grammar will be deducted at a rate of .5 marks per error (this includes improper capitalization of proper nouns – such as company names – be sure to use legal names – not simply refer to how their stylized word mark might appear. For example “Twitter” is correct… “twitter” is incorrect and would result in a .5 deduction from your final score.)
• First Person Writing/Personal Pronouns: This paper is to be written as an academic paper. This paper is not to be written in the first person and therefore is not to include “I”/”my”, etc.
• Note: The TAs will subjectively evaluate the quality/depth of the work. Simply having a piece of information is not sufficient. Your work must be clear, appropriate, and meaningful to receive credit.

Keep In MIND

1) Template elements do not count toward the word count limits.
2) For the sources While you can have more than three, I would recommend not more than 5. Please remember to also have your in-text citations for each of these as well.
3) You Are we only allowed to use one of the links you provided? Do we need to find at least 2 more on our own
4) The template is neutral so that it can apply to each of the topics.
I’ll use the Logan Paul topic as an example to walk you through.
The issue at the crux of before social media on this topic is around fame and celebrity. How did people rise to public prominence in a more traditional sense? The context would relate to how social media has changed how people become famous. The background would relate to his rise to fame as a YouTube Star and how he used that fame up to the incident.
The ethics of this are more around responsible use of technology and respect for society’s norms. For instance, was it responsible for him to post the video from Japan? Has his response to the criticism been consistent with responsible expectations?
Current trends would look at the discussion around the incident and perspective polices/technological solutions that could prevent a similar situation from arising. For instance, YouTube’s decision to suspend his ad revenue. You should be answering each topic in the form of a well developed paragraph or two that explores the questions that are posed (as starter questions). You can use one of the articles I have posted, and need to find two more reputable sources.

5) This paper is to be written as an academic paper. This paper is not to be written in the first person and therefore is not to include “I”/”my”, etc.
