You will pick a day where you can commit to no voicing for at least five active and consecutive hours.* Within that time frame, you must be around people and interact with them somehow. You must also wear earplugs for the entire 5 hours. You may not use any kind of media with sound – everything must be muted and captioned (if available). Your challenge is to participate in the hearing world while mindfully not listening. This exercise will help you more clearly recognize barriers and access for d/Deaf people, attitudes and perceptions of d/Deaf people, and the everyday life of d/Deaf people. You will write a paper of at least two and no more than three pages about your day outlining your significant feelings, thoughts, questions, etc. You will also include in your reflection how you will create a more accessible world for d/Deaf individuals and your biggest takeaway from this experience.
