1. Obtain a set of unknown objects to be weighed from the instructor. Record the unknown number on the data sheet.
2. Weigh the metal rod and the vial containing sodium chloride on the triple beam balance. Record the weights to the correct number of significant digits on the data sheet. See the instructor if the pointer does not come to rest on the scale when the balance is empty or if other questions arise.” DO NOT simply copy this and call it a procedure. Step 1 does not need to be included in a summary; it is simply your preparation for the experiment to be done. To summarize the main point that comes next, you would write: “ A metal rod and vial of sodium chloride are weighed on the triple beam balance.” OR – “ A metal rod and vial of sodium chloride were weighed on the triple beam balance.” This is fine also, even though you will be writing it before you’ve done the experiment. There are several WRONG ways to write a procedure: -Do NOT include excruciating detail. – Do NOT write commands: “Weigh the metal rod and the vial containing sodium chloride on the triple beam balance.” WRONG! -Do NOT use “we” or “I”: “I weighed the metal….” WRONG! -Do NOT leave the subject out, as an easy way to get rid of “we” or “I”: “Weighed the metal rod…”
