Description

Purpose

This assignment is designed for developing at least one outcome audit criterion, operationalizing (making measurable) that criterion, and assessing the psychometric—primarily reliability and validity—of that measurement instrument or method. You are now taking the ‘next step’ to identify how you will know whether the recommended practice, if implemented, makes the difference you expect.

Directions for developing an outcome audit criterion/outcome indicator:

  1. The audit criterion/indicator will be based upon your evidence summary and driven by one of your recommended practices.

Recommended Practice:
Culturally sensitive dietary management counseling for AA HTN sufferers have to be can be preceded by community focus groups, to gather data about prevalent beliefs related to HTN and diet, as well as actual eating practices, perceptions of barriers to healthier eating, and perceptions of the diet (JBI recommendation grade of B) (can be re-worded to fit audit criterion/indicator format)

  1. The audit criterion/indicator will be focused on process and outcome measures of the recommended practice. In other words, the audit criterion/indicator will answer the question: “If I implement my recommended practice what patient process and outcome do I expect to see?”
  2. The audit criterion/indicator will be consistent with guidelines presented in The Joanna Briggs Institute Translation Science Handbook for Internal Research Fellows, 2013 pages 25-44. Perhaps most importantly, the criterion must be measurable.

Directions for selecting and evaluating an instrument or method to operationalize the outcome audit criterion/outcome indicator:

  1. The instrument or method is based upon the studies you used to develop your evidence summary. In other words, the instrument or method appears in at least one of the studies, ideally in more than one.
  2. The instrument or method is intended to measure the outcome you have chosen as the focus of your outcome audit criterion/outcome indicator.
  3. If possible, find published psychometric assessment of the instrument with patients similar to your identified population. You may have to conduct a literature search specific to the instrument; one or two articles are sufficient in this case. Summarize the published information for your psychometric assessment. You primarily will be addressing reliability and validity of the instrument. You may, however, find information describing specificity and sensitivity, depending on whether you have chosen a method or procedure (ex., blood draw and lab testing) to measure your selected outcome. (see attached article-about psychometric tool for hypertension)
  4. If no published evidence is available, describe how you would assess reliability and validity of the instrument or method you have chosen. Address only those types of reliability and validity that are relevant to your use of the instrument or method
