You will be assigned 7 articles on research in educational psychology. For five of those articles,
you will write a 2-3 page (double spaced) paper discussing and critiquing the research article. If
you complete more than five papers, your five highest scoring papers will be used to calculate
your final grade. Papers are to be turned in on Canvas by the beginning of class on the due date.
This paper can include a critique of the research methods used, whether you feel that the data
discussed in the article support the conclusions drawn by the authors, or how the content of this
article relates to another topic we have discussed in class. Papers will be graded based on clarity
of writing and critical analysis of the article.
Format for Papers (20 points total)
Purpose – (3 points)
What are the stated purposes of the study?
How does it relate to past work?
Method – (5 points)
Subjects – age and composition of subjects
Design and procedure – experimental design of the study (e.g., cross-sectional,
longitudinal etc.; nature of experimental and control groups, if any)
Overview of procedure and experimental tasks (you need not write about the tasks in
detail).
Results & Discussion – (5 points)
Briefly state the principle results of interest and the author’s discussion of these results.
Try to relate the results to issues raised in the Purpose section. Also be sure to include
any results which you think qualify the author’s conclusions.
Critique – (6 points)
Address the following issues when making your critique:
The appropriateness of the author’s conclusions given the design (e.g., were any variables
confounded?) general procedure (e.g., does the experimental procedure insure that the
child’s optimal level of performance is obtained?), or statistical tests used in the study.
Did the author actually demonstrate what they claimed they demonstrated?
Given the author’s findings, what additional research should be contemplated?
What implications does this research have for practitioners in applied settings?
Format and Grammar – (1 point)
Other notes:
Avoid using “prove” or “proof” in your paper. Using these words in scientific writing may cause
your instructor to be grumpy or unhappy during the grading of your paper. Consider using
“support” or “evidence of”.
