You are an environmental consultant who has been retained by Pipelines R Us Ltd to advise on a proposed
drinking water pipeline it is planning to install.
The project involves the laying of a steel pipe measuring 200mm in diameter to replace a section of existing
pipe. At either end of the pipeline will be a new pumping station consisting of a brick building measuring 5m
wide, 5m long and 3m high and an access track from the nearest road.
Once the new section of pipeline is installed it will be connected to the pumping stations and the old section
abandoned and left in the ground.
The principal method of laying the pipe will be to follow standard industry practice using open trench
technology. The trench will measure 500mm wide by 1500mm deep. A 20m wide working area will be
required.
Pipelines R Us has already completed the conceptual design stage to produce the most likely route for the
pipeline based on a number of geological, economic and environmental constraints (see map provided).
The Managing Director would like a report of 1500 words addressing the following points, giving full
justification, citing guidance and legislation where useful:

  1. Using desktop research identify the following:
10 potential impacts to ecology receptors
5 potential impacts to heritage receptors
5 potential impacts to landscape receptors
5 potential impacts to human receptors
These should be specific impacts caused by the development.
  2. Suggest which of those impacts are likely to be significant impacts and explain the method you used to
    reach that conclusion.
  3. Suggest what mitigation could be introduced that would help to minimize the significant impacts you have
    identified.
Preferred language style Simple (Easy vocabulary, simple grammar constructions)
