Suggestions for writing an essay
-make sure art movements names are always in capital letters e.g. Surrealism
– all you need underneath each image is a Figure number e.g. Figure #1, Figure #2 etc. Then in the writing where you mention the artwork you place the name of the work, year and figure number e.g. Edvard Munch ‘The Scream’1893 (Figure #1). You do not need the materials that the work was made with.
-At the end of the essay you then have a Figure List. You then list each artwork that was used throughout the entire essay e.g. Figure #1 Edvard Munch ‘The Scream’1893, Figure #2 etc. You do not need to have the images again in the Figure List
– In the introduction and conclusion make sure you state what are the main issues being discussed in the essay
– for artists when you first mention them make sure you have their full name plus country and type of artists they are e.g. Spanish Cubist artist Pablo Picasso. After you mention them once like this you only have to then state their name e.g. Picasso throughout the remainder of the essay
– Go through the entire essay and make sure where ever you make a statement or use a quote / reference that you expand and clarify what you mean. By doing this it will better demonstrate what you are attempting to say.
