The figure is known as Fry’s Readability Graph. This can be found in your text on page 324 (The book is “Strategies for teaching students with learning and behavior problems” i cant attached this, but this will be your primary source)
The directions on how to determine the grade level of any reading passage is described on that page. This 6-step process requires a sample of 100 words. I have attached a sample passage that will be your 2nd source; Oprah Winfrey Date of birth: January 29, 1954
Begin counting the first 100 words starting with the first paragraph. Bom to an unwed teenage mother…
Next, count how many sentences and parts of a sentence are found in those first 100 words.
Next, count the number of syllables within the same 100 words. Using the number of sentences (vertical access) and the number of syllables (horizontal axis), use the grid in your text and estimate the approximate grade level of the Oprah passage.
In the forum discuss your findings and if that level surprised you. Also – think about how you could use this information -determining readability level – in your instructional practice.
