Do not make vague generalizations—instead explain important points in detail, providing concrete examples where appropriate.  you are expected to make specific references to arguments and examples from the reading.  When you discuss a specific point made by one of the authors—either paraphrased in your own words or as a direct quotation—you should indicate the page number where this point is made.  For example:  Kingdom argues that …. (p.40). Finally, make sure to cover all the parts of the question.

  1. Prepare a memo for the next U.S. President. What approach should s/he take to address challenges in the health care system?  As you write your memo, keep in mind what you consider to be the appropriate role for government in ensuring access to health care.

Begin your memo with an overview of the current status of health care coverage in the U.S.  What does the Affordable Care Act, enacted under President Obama do to extend health care coverage to more Americans?  Do you recommend that the new President work to strengthen the Affordable Care Act?  Or, should the new President pursue a different set of health care policies?  As you make your recommendation, consider what those who disagree might say in response to your key points.  How would you respond (in other words, why aren’t you persuaded by their counter-arguments)?   Finally, what is the political feasibility of what you recommend?  What political factors should the President consider if they move forward with your recommendations?  Consider what we know generally about the politics of social policy in the U.S., as well as the specific politics of health care.

In your answer, you should make specific references to the reading. You can use arguments from the reading to support your own view, to illustrate what those with whom you disagree might say, and to highlight the politics of policy making in this area.
