Write a letter to the policy maker addressing the selected advocacy issue. To increase the likelihood that the letter will actually be read and taken seriously, use the following guidelines for writing letters to policy makers as described in The Community Tool Box (2011):
Decide on a recipient and have proper recipient address and correct spelling of names.
Use an official opening with date, respectful title, and full address.
Explain the purpose of the communication.
Discuss the general (summary) impact of the issue.
State and explain your personal position on the issue.
Describe what any changes in the issue will mean personally.
Identify those affected and show the public health burden by using data.
Acknowledge the policy maker’s previous support of policy issues, if applicable.
Describe the desired action of the policy maker or offer an alternative if the purpose is to oppose a previous action.
Close the letter and sign the letter, including the appropriate contact information.
