Through research it’s identified that Henderson’s 14 components of nursing framework entail 14 basic needs that closely resemble aspects that are on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and discusses how health care providers can meet these basic needs as noted in her textbook titled Principles and Practices of Nursing. (Butts & Rich, 2018). It is not enough to just conduct research, the only means as to how this research will help our patients and the advancement of the nursing profession and field is if we utilize this research and incorporate it into our daily practice to achieve better healthcare outcomes. A means as to how to ensure that we utilize research in the right way includes beginning research practices in nursing school to familiarize each nurse with the significance and necessity of continued research in the profession. Education and understanding that what we currently use in our common practice was not always the case, the standards we practice by at this time all came from evidence-based practices and years of research!

Granger (2017) proposes a great question; “as nurses, we are aware of the importance of evidence-based practice (EBP) and want to implement all relevant evidence into practice, but what counts as “relevant”? Should all reasonably translatable findings be implemented? What do we do about practice recommendations based on studies conducted in a patient population or setting different from our own?”, (p. 1). I understand this question as a way for us to realize that evidence from previously conducted research studies may have been carried out in a completely different environment than the one in which I may be working in. Taking that into account, we must consider how varying factors may affect the influence of outcomes and needs of patients. In some instances, there may be a lack of research and evidence-based practices in specific settings, especially new settings such as one of my positions of concierge intravenous (IV) infusion nursing care, this is an area that has not been around for countless years and although IV infusions are care have been around for quite a while, the recreation of it has not been, therefore it will require situation-specific research to determine evidence-based practices, and research to understand outcomes and how to achieve optimal patient care and best nursing practice for this area.

According to Gray et al. (2017) research essentials include a summary of what is known about the phenomenon of interest, the justification for what importance the research would discover to bridge the knowledge gap, as well as the population at hand, or the setting of interest. Each of these factors are important as the reason for research is to enhance understanding of a phenomenon at interest, and to do so would contribute increased knowledge to put to use by health care professionals implementing this advanced knowledge into practice which will lead to better health outcomes for our patients. In order to achieve this, researchers should follow proper research protocols to ensure that information is received as best/accurate as possible, (Gray et al., 2017).
