This paper is a research paper designed to further an understanding of Claudia Rankine’s book ‘Citizen: An American Lyric’. I am focusing on how her identity as a black woman impacts the nature of her art and how those identities effects how the art is perceived and received. Some of the sources I have are this ted talk about black art www.ted.com/talks/thelma_golden_how_art_gives_shape_to_cultural_change/details. I liked this because I wanted to talk about the burden of minorities to represent their communities. A more scholarly article for this is 4. Kobena Mercer (1990) Black art and the burden of representation, which is good but a bit too old to rely on exclusively. I also found this interesting article www.aaihs.org/black-art-and-social-justice-an-interview-with-elizabeth-burden/. that touches on the idea of what black art is. Then for feminity: Davies, Carole Boyce. Black Women, Writing and Identity: Migrations of the Subject. Routledge, 2002. which I thought would be a good connection into how Rankine has multiple identities and the cross road of this. For specific Rankine connections I have this https://muse.jhu.edu/article/668815/pdf?casa_token=NGcdx2ib5BMAAAAA:ZpxpNweXxSKyFL1YY2Dbh25kjeeM6GXAPCZaJ1tgXRXobrqF5822_ZhtLfr0VCIBsQvNA-wNZHQ article.
