How do geologists study and mitigate losses due to natural disasters?

You will be working independently to study and create a preparedness guide for a natural disaster that threatens an international location of your choice (your natural disaster must be outside the U.S.A. and Canada). Your natural disaster MUST be a SPECIFIC GEOLOGIC disaster which occurred anytime in history. This includes any volcanic eruption, earthquake, sinkhole, landslide (due to geology, not weather) or tsunami produced by these phenomena. Weather related topics (tornados, hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, regional floods, wild fires) are strictly off-limits for this project. Your project will consist of a trifold, double-sided brochure. You must include some of the following information in your brochure for the following questions:

• Where is your geographic location? What is the population? What is the culture and languages spoken there? What kind of wildlife lives there and why might someone visit?
• What is the geology of your area like? What processes (tectonic, etc.) were involved in the formation of your area?
• What kinds of natural GEOLOGICAL disasters could affect your area? Of these disasters, which are you focusing on?
• How common is this disaster? Historically, when was the last time this disaster affected your area? How often has your area been affected?
• What are the major causes of damage, destruction, and death associated with this disaster? What is the economic impact?
• How do geologists study this phenomenon? Can they accurately predict when the disaster might occur? What, if anything, can be done before the disaster happens? How can you prepare?
• What safety precautions should be done before or during the disaster?
• What actions should be done after the disaster?
