Journalism has always been a dangerous profession. There is an old adage that says that “the pen is mightier than the sword.” For that reason, reporters pose a risk to those who fear embarrassment and/or don’t want the public to know about government corruption or misdeeds. One indispensable source of information is the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) https://cplorg. CPJ estimates that 54 reporters were killed in 2018 worldwide.
For your second paper, please write about at least three cases of reporters — in three separate countries – who have been silenced, murdered, arrested, or charged with serious crimes by government prosecutors. In each case, describe the work of the reporter, what makes their work significant and the apparent reasons for the attacks on them or their work.
Looking at those three cases, and at the overall level of danger that reporters now face, please discuss whether journalists are in greater risk today than in the past — and whether the risks are greater or less great in certain countries or regions. What trends can you identify, and what are the possible reasons for those trends?
