Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts for biological reactions. In other words, they accelerate reactions. They are substrate specific, meaning that

certain enzymes only bind at active sites of specific substrates (or a family of substrates), catalyzing specific reactions. There are many different classes

of enzymes. For example, hydrolases catalyze the hydrolysis of a substrate through the addition of water and synthases catalyze the synthesis of a substance.

Numerous factors can impact the enzymatic rate of reaction, including concentration, pH and temperature.
