Description

Select a strategic leader you would want to be your mentor. Choose someone who inspires
you because he or she reflects your deepest aspirations. This assignment should be
between 3,500 – 4,000 words. Prepare your assignment in MS Word and follow the
formatting instructions in the Student Handbook .

Pretend this person is your mentor. What is it about him or her that you most admire and
what would you draw from his or her leadership experiences to enrich your own? We hope
that by standing on your mentor’s ‘shoulders,’ you will see further along your personal
strategic leadership journey.

There are three essential components to this assignment:

  1. Summary of the leader (historical discussion). Here, you are to provide a rich
story of your mentor’s strategic leadership experiences. You will have to draw on a
variety of sources that tell the tale of his or her strategic leadership exploits. Thus,
it is important to select a mentor that has ‘ready’ information available.
  2. Critical discussion of the leader. After discussing the leader’s exploits, critically
examine his or her leadership skills. Be sure to look at his or her strengths but also
look at his or her weaknesses. It is essential that you draw from the course
material to make your points (e.g. leadership style). A deficiency in relating your
mentor’s approach to strategic leadership to the material covered in the course
will result in a failing grade.
  3. Leadership lessons learned. Describe and discuss the lessons that you have
learned from your mentor. Write in the first person.
