General
Write a research paper of 10-15 pages in length on a legal issue in criminal justice. Note that the 10-15 page requirement is the body of the text only and does not include the title page or reference list.
A researched essay usually presents the personal views of the author; its content must be supported by data or information obtained through appropriate research, such as articles in scholarly publications.
You must not engage in plagiarism; see syllabus below for more information on this subject.
One of the following strategies may be used:
Write a position paper on a legal topic from the list provided.
Select your own topic and seek pre-approval from me.
The focus of your essay should be on the presentation, development, and evaluation of your position on your topic. Do not merely report what the articles or cases have said; rather, analyze them and emphasize defense of your position.
Follow the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition, particularly citation and reference styles. APA style may be difficult to learn at first, so do not hesitate to ask me for guidance.
The essay will be graded using the grading rubric in this syllabus.
All essays must be written and printed from a computer or word processor on quality bond paper, double spaced, indented single-space paragraphs, and clear and easy to read 12-point font.
Essays turned in after the due date will be penalized 50 points per day, unless prior approval is given by me.
Please note that only extraordinary conditions that are completely beyond our control will justify a late submission. It is not an extraordinary situation if you wait until the night before the due date to begin your paper, but some unforeseen circumstance prevents you from completing it on time!
The essay is a course requirement; without turning it in, the only grade that a student can earn is an F.
