In a 6 page Mission Command Paper, students will analyze a commander’s performance in a pre-approved historical battle. This analysis will evaluate how effectively or ineffectively the commander executed 4 of the 6 Mission Command Principles: build cohesive teams through mutual trust, create shared understanding, provide clear commander’s intent, exercise disciplined initiative, use mission orders, and accept prudent risk. Students will discuss how the commander’s use of those principles affected the battle’s outcome. Summary of the battle should be very brief so as to privilege the doctrinal analysis over telling the story of the battle. Students must conduct thorough research to include a minimum of 4 scholarly sources (books and/or articles).
