Research and write an essay about a non-fiction filmmaker who has made a significant contribution to the documentary form. You will need to argue how the filmmaker has made a contribution to documentary. You must have a Research Statement at the beginning of your paper. The filmmaker does not need to be prolific to count as important, but rather they must have made a significant contribution to the documentary form through their unique voice, innovative style and/or their ground-breaking choice of subject matter. In your paper, you should critically analyze the filmmaker’s most important film(s), and how this work helped take documentary into a new direction and/or expand its definition. Your essay should include academic sources that support your research and analysis.
Below is a list of suggested documentary filmmakers you could profile: • Jennifer Baichwal (CAN) • Liz Garbus (US) • Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Pakistan/Canada) • Sylvia Hamilton (CAN) • Albert and David Maysles (US) • Alanis Obomsawin (CAN) • Trinh T.
