Explain the problem: Many of us tend to think of social issues from within our own cultural views and experiences thus have limited understanding of other cultures. The purpose of this assignment is to recognize our own cultural perspective and opening our knowledge to other cultures thus reducing ethnocentrism and cultural bias.

The student will research and describe a culture different than their own and explain how the differences between the cultures (selected culture and own culture) result in conflicts.

How do differences between cultures lead to ethnocentrism and cultural bias?
Why did you choose this culture to study in more depth?
Evidence: Through research, the student will thoroughly describe at least two examples of conflicts between the cultures. Two academic sources must be used to document the findings.

Influence and Context:

How do the cultures and their respective conflicts contribute to ethnocentrism and cultural bias? (Political, Social, Ethical, Religious, Educational, etc.)
What information has the student gained through this assignment that may provide further insight into the complexities of a multi-cultural society?
Student Position:

Which of the conflicts most significantly contributes to ethnocentrism and cultural bias? Explain your response.
How has this research changed the way you see the selected culture? How has it impacted your understanding of why members of the culture engages in certain behaviors/practices?
How has becoming more knowledgeable about a culture different than your own reduced personal ethnocentrism?
Conclusions:

Can you explain some misconceptions you may have had about another culture and how you learned to dispel these misconceptions? What interesting facts did you learn about another culture (i.e. rituals, celebrations, beliefs, customs, religious practices, etc.)?
What questions about other cultures resulted after conducting the research?
