This critique provides students an opportunity to gain information on a particular topic of interest and allows students to become more familiar with basic research strategies and primary source format. It also allows students to integrate information from various sources and critically analyze current research. Students will select an empirical article from either the journal Developmental Psychology or Child Development published within the last ten years. Use of Psychlnfo is strongly encouraged. Empirical studies use data derived from actual observation or experiment (this excludes literature reviews and strictly theoretical papers; please also exclude meta-analyses). The article selected should be related to course material (i.e., not on adolescence because that is not covered in this course). Students will then write a 6-7 page (not including cover page/reference list) analysis of the study. Your paper should be in APA 6th ed. format. Papers should be well-cited.
The parts of your paper will be as follows:
Introduction Overview of the study: Summarize the study (i.e.. purpose, methods, results, and implications). The overview should be a minimum of 3 pages. Integration of course material: Tie in the study with course material covered in HDFS 310. You will use the text as your primary source and the PowerPoints if the material you are focusing on was in lecture but not in the text. Your integration of material should be at least 2 pages. Study limitations and future directions: Critique the study and suggest a “next step” for future research. Were there problems or limitations in the methodology? What are some questions left unanswered by this research? Where do we go from here? This section should be at least 1 page. Conclusion
