Define and analyze a population health problem at the local, state, national or global level, and
evaluate intervention/policy alternatives using the problem solving methodology (See outline
below). Use the outline below to frame the paper. In other words, follow the outline to create the
paper’s narrative or text. This academic paper requires citations and references with a minimum
page length of 5 pages and submitted via Blackboard Learn (Learn) during week 16. Please seek
guidance from library and web resources. Please use the APA reference format for documenting
your sources. If you struggle as a writer, then seek assistance here. The key steps to the
population health problem solving methodology are:

  1. Problem Definition a. What is the problem/issue – high rates of heavy drinking on college campuses, no seat belt use, drinking and driving or other issues facing New Mexicans – review this report for ideas and Healthy People.
    b. Determining a case – for example, BMI percentiles above 85th percentile, 150
minutes or more of exercise each week, people diagnosed with cancer or high blood pressure.
    c. Magnitude of the Problem
    i. Who – gender, race, age, income, education level
ii. Where – rural, urban, suburban; region of the community, state or nation
iii. How many (prevalence v incidence) and compared to whom (context that
is created by having data at the local, state, national and global levels)
iv. Change over time – the most current data compared to, for example, five,
    10, and 20 years ago
  2. Key Determinants (Integrative Systems Thinking!) – Risk and Protective Factors of the
    problem
    a. Behaviors – are there any behaviors that are related to or cause the problem?
    b. Policies – what policies are either in place or do not exist that affect the problem?
    c. Biology – are there any biological determinants or causes of the problem?
    d. Environment – does where people live, work and play pose any risk that leads to
    the problem?
