The policing chapter goes into depth about issues in race and policing, but it does not mention many of the prominent cases involving police and use of force incidents in the last few years that have been discussed widely in the media.
For this assignment, you are to search the Internet to find newspaper/magazine/web articles about race/ethnicity and the criminal justice system and policing.
Choose two cases that have been in the news over the last five years about race and policing in some capacity (it can be on police use deadly force, policing of immigration by border control etc). Choose two articles that appear to be from reputable sources and are not just opinion pieces written on far left or far right leaning websites.
- After you choose two articles (on two different cases) to use for this assignment, you will then want to add links to those articles at the top of your paper so that the professor can review each.
- In paper format (using paragraphs etc. to discuss your topics) complete the following:
a. First review each of the articles (1 paragraph per article) to explain the case each article discusses
b. Discuss the importance of each article in terms of race/ethnicity and policing
c. Critique each article. Are the articles representative accounts of the issues the article discusses? What does the article leave out or need to expand on to better inform the public of the topic?
d. Explain your own feelings on each of the topics you chose to write about. How are your own impressions similar/different from those described in the article?
e. Finally, end your assignment by discussing what you think is the single most important issue facing the criminal justice system in regards to race/ethnicity and policing today. Discuss why you believe this to be the most important issue and provide one potential solution that could help alleviate this problem.
