The purpose of the reflection assignments is to help students to think more deeply about and synthesize the information in the assigned materials for each case in preparation for class discussion, as well as to practice clear, concise, and well-organized written communication skills. Each reflection should be no more than 300 words in length and should include ALL THE FOLLOWING:
- A discussion of how the topic impacts population health (i.e., why is it important?) Be specific in your answer and be sure to include WHO is affected and state reasons WHY this is of public health interest. (Note: If it is a historical case, state how this impacted population health and changed current practice — in other words, why is it important?)
- Whether you think that this public health issue is being/was handled effectively and what you would recommend if you were a stakeholder or decision-maker
- An example of how information in this week’s topic connects with Cross-Cutting Themes in Public Health or other classes in the public health curriculum, your past experiences or knowledge of the issue, previous cases, or historical relevance. Integrate new information that you have collected or researched if applicable. (you could use health policy class as example) NOTE: If you include information in your responses taken directly from articles, you must use appropriate citations and include a bibliography.
Reflections will be graded on a 10 point scale, with three points for covering each of the three topics listed above and one point for writing (e.g., organization, grammar) and adhering to the word count.
