CASE STUDY:

Aliya Begum is an 18 year old girl and she is having a more confusing time than many. She has some complex learning and physical disabilities and until now, has been living at home with her family. Now she wants more independence and is moving out. It’s a scary time for her and her family and so they are all working closely with the local NHS, social care services as well as with social workers from the local authority.
Aliya Begum has speech problems which often make it difficult for her to be understood. She also has severe learning difficulties and can sometimes be faced with problems and obstacles that someone else her age would be able to cope with, but that she doesn’t really understand. Aliya Begum has regular contact with her occupational therapy team who are helping her to prepare for her new life. Her NHS occupational therapist is teaching her new skills like shopping for herself, cooking and keeping a house clean.
When Aliya Begum is living on her own or is away from her family, it will be even more important for her to be able to communicate with those around her. She has developed a really good relationship with Sarah Silence, her speech and language therapist, who will be continuing to help her through the transition to her new independent life. They work together to learn new words and when to use them, and she helps Aliya Begum with clearer pronunciation.
Aliya Begum has also been seeing a lot of her local learning disability nursing team in preparation for her new life. They have been helping her to understand some of the thing she’ll need to do for herself once she moves away from home. Simple things, like washing and dressing herself properly – it may not seem much, but it’ll be a big step for Aliya Begum.
Aliya Begum’s speech and language therapist speaks Hindi, the same language as Aliya Begum. Cultural issues can sometimes make life even more difficult, but and as well as speaking the same language, her therapist immediately understands where she’s coming from if she has any worries. Aliya Begum tends to get quite anxious about things, and this can lead to tension in her family and with her friends. So every often, when her healthcare team feel it would be good for her, she sees the clinical psychologist who has been part of her life since she was a young child. They talk about what is upsetting her, and look for ways to help her relax and get on with her life.
