Description

  1. Self Reflection Paper:

Step 1. Review the document “Cultural Competence Continuum” located within the Module One folder. You are not required to turn this in; it is an exercise that you will use when writing your reflection paper. Determine where you “fall” on the competence continuum. Most students tend to over-estimate so please think through this carefully and determine your category.

Step 2. Explore your own cultural backgrounds; family origin; advantages and disadvantages of belonging to an ethnic/racial group; own biases; prejudices and stereotypes about your own group and others; similarities and differences between our own group and others. For further exploration of bias, you must go to the following website and complete at least three of the demonstration tests to assist in your self-discovery.
The website is: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html
There are 13 bias test choices—skin tone, age, gender-career, disability, gender-science, Asian, sexuality, presidents, Native, race, weight, weapons, and Arab-Muslim.

In your personal reflection carefully consider the following questions:
• Think about a time when you were with a group of people from another country, or even another part of your country of origin. What were the similarities and differences in culture?
• What would you describe as your culture? How would you rank the following in order of importance: ethnicity, family, work, the future, diet and religion? Do you believe that your clients would have the same priorities?
• What does your body language say about you? How might a client from another culture interpret your posture, eye contact and the tone of your voice? Could your body language be communicating something different from your words?
• As an individual, how do you value personal independence, family, freedom, meaningful work, spirituality, etc.? How does/might this have an impact on your relationships with clients?
• Which three bias tests did you complete and what are you thoughts on the results? Are you biased to any particular group(s).
• Which category are you on the Cultural Competence Continuum? What areas of the continuum can you make changes? What is your desire to engage in these potential changes to become a more culturally competent practitioner?

Write your paper based on your reflections from above prompts and include a reaction to the bias self-assessments you may have completed and in which category you fall into on the “Cultural Competence Continuum”. Your paper should be typed using 12pt Font (Times-New Roman), double-spaced, APA formatted, and 4-6 pages in length. The assignment should be uploaded under the file extensions of .doc/.docx (MicroSoft Word) or .pdf (PDF). References are to be in APA format and follow proper in text citation style. Papers will be evaluated based on the degree to which your major points are logical and are articulated in a clear, straightforward, and understandable way. Each of the following will be considered: organization/flow, sentence/paragraph structure, spelling, and grammar. Your paper should have an introduction, a body divided into paragraphs as appropriate, and a conclusion. See the grading rubric for this assignment. Submit the assignment using the TURNITIN link. This assignment is worth 50 points.
