Human beings are defined as “social animals” because in every aspect of life, they live together and form groups and relationships with each other. Society and its rules have a social impact on each individual. People conform for many reasons including peer pressure, following what is expected and acceptable by the majority, fear of consequences when they don’t conform, doing what is best for the greater good. If people are faced with social impact such as group pressure, a great part of them show conformity by changing their behaviors, ideas, and decisions in an expected way. A person conforms when he or she chooses a course of action that a majority favors or that is socially acceptable. Some kind of conformity is natural and socially healthy. However, from an early age we are often taught that it is bad to be unique and we should avoid being different.
In Herman Melville’s short story “Bartleby the Scrivener, a Story of Wall Street” and Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery,” the theme of social conformity is at center. Write a single spaced essay in which you discuss the ways each story deals with elements of conformity. You may focus on ways the stories are similar, and ways they are not. Give specific examples.
You will need to use 3 direct quotes from each story in your paper. This will help you focus your argument and essay. You will need to accurately cite your examples. “Example” (Author’s Last Name Page#).
Example: “I would prefer not to.” (Melville 1).
Remember to introduce quotations by providing the context and always explain how your examples show what you claim they show (like in the highlight exercises).
