We have all been through a considerable amount of change and uncertainty in the last few months with the
COVID-19 Pandemic. If you have been following along with the press reports, data usage is everywhere.
Many of the decisions that have been made were based on the data. How is it used? When do the experts
know when it’s appropriate to return to “normal”. Take, for example, the development of a vaccine.
Considerable testing and trials are needed before it can be released for consumption to the general public;
a process that can take years. Much of the regulations surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine have been
relaxed. Why? How is
Is this possible?
As I point out in chapter 1 slides, statistics is all about asking questions, analyzing data/facts, and then
making decisions. What I would like for you to do is to take some time and review the information from the
Center for Disease Control (CDC), State of Michigan, and State of New York’s websites on the COVID-19
virus.
Questions to consider:
• What do you notice about the websites?
• What does the data say to you?
• What doesn’t the data say? What limitations do you think exist?
• What questions do you have about this data?
• What kind of study would you like to conduct?
• What technical vocabulary, concepts, or visuals are you finding hard to understand?
• What do you hope to get out of this class that will help you better understand this information?
• What other reactions do you have?
• How has this pandemic impacted you?
• What role do you think the media has played during this pandemic?
