Many directors storyboard their entire film before they begin. Learning a little about this skill will help you appreciate how making a film works. In addition the assignment should help make you more sensitive to editing and camera work when you watch a film.

Step 1 – Chose a scene you want to storyboard. Don’t get too complicated or long winded. Try to find something interesting and easy to convey.

Step 2 – Get a camera and carefully shoot a series of still photographs of the event. Pay attention to different angles, point of view, close up and far away shots, the expressions of your actors, and the scenery around them. Make sure the story is clear. Only shoot with your camera oriented sideways like a movie screen.

Step 3 – Assemble the photographs in to an order so they tell a story like a comic book without words.
