Much like yourselves, the world has seen and read a million different versions of every play Shakespeare ever wrote. So much so, that every decade or so a story comes out about a “new” Shakespeare play having been found, only to quickly be discarded as a fake. With everyone knowing these plays so well, it is often up to directors to find a new way to think about the plays to bring a fresh perspective. With this in mind, I’d like you to answer the following question:
How can you make Shakespeare feel fresh? Think of a way you could stage Merchanct of Venice in a way which would add a new perspective and explain the intention.
Some things to consider:
What is the new idea?
What is the intent behind the idea?
How will you use the existing text in your view production?
