For this assignment, you’ll write a journalistic story on a topic of your choice for the Nebraska
Department of Aeronautics Newsletter (a.k.a. PIREPS). We may have an opportunity to submit these for
actual publication in an upcoming issue, but this depends entirely on whether or not I hear back from
its publishers on time. If we’re given a shot at publication, I will do a frst reading of your articles, then
forward the top ten to the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics, who will select the articles for
publication. The editor of PIREPS is keenly interested in articles written by young people who represent
the next generation of leaders in Nebraska’s aviation community.
Whether we’re writing for publication or not, you should review recent issues of PIREPS at
aero.nebraska.gov to understand both the kinds of articles that get published and the audience for
whom you’ll be writing. You should aim to write about a new or emerging topic that has yet to be
covered (or covered minimally at best), but you’re welcome to write about a well-established topic if
you approach it from a fresh angle.
You must also interview at least one professional or expert who has something to say about your
subject, then quote or cite him/her in your article. This professional or expert might be a commercial
pilot, a professor, an airline employee, or someone else—but he/she should not be one of your
classmates (unless, of course, one of said classmates is an authority on your subject; in that case, I’d
make an exception).
Format and Guidelines
You may write in any of the journalistic genres we’ve discussed in class (news story, feature story, review,
editorial, press release, or letter to the editor).
Your story should be 350-400 words in length, and use 12-point Times New Roman font (or something
similar), double-spacing, and one-inch margins on all sides.
Include a title (centered and bold) at the top of your story. Please also include your name, email
address, and phone number (centered) under the title.
As always, submit your work via Canvas by the due date (see Canvas for current deadline).
Helpful Tip
As with all writing assignments, pay special attention to your audience and tone. Proofread and edit
carefully, and you just may end up getting published.
