Although very different stories, both Jackson’s short story, ‘The Lottery,” and Bambara’s “The Lesson” illustrate the primary significance at the heart of the story and its plot in a single image at the conclusion of each story.
In Jackson’s short story, we see the villagers moving in on Mrs Hutchinson as she decries the inequity of her selection by the lottery process; as Jackson writes: “‘It isn’t fair, it isn’t right,’ Mrs. Hutchinson screamed and then they were upon her’ (296).
In “The Lesson,” Bambara first shows us Sugar seeming to give the right answers to Miss Moore. Yet, she ends the story with its protagonist confessing that she does not mean to follow Sugar to Hascombs but to,instead, go to “the West End and over to the Drive to think this day through” (131).
For this reading journal, discuss what you believe to be the essential message (or meaning, or significance) of each story, and reference how this message relates to the two moments identified in the examples provided above.
