As you progress through this course, you will study several different theories, some of which have more similarities than differences and vice versa. In order for you to learn about the theories more effectively, you will create a Theories of Counseling Chart [DOC] that will include important aspects of each theory. As you review the theories each week, you will complete the sections of the chart. You will work on this chart throughout the course and submit it as an assignment in Unit 8. You will be able to refer to this chart throughout your classes, into your practicum and internship, and later as you study for licensure exams.
Refer to your readings, videos, and the optional resources in each unit to assist you in completing your chart. In addition, as you work through each unit, you may want to explore the optional websites listed under each Theories of Counseling Chart activity.

Postmodern and Family Systems Approaches
INTRODUCTION
In this unit, you will study theories that fall under the postmodern paradigm or worldview in which counselors work toward change starting with the client’s subjective reality. Two kinds of postmodern approaches are narrative therapy and solution-focused therapy. You will also study family systems therapy, which operates in philosophical contrast to most counseling theories by focusing less on the individual’s internal processes than on the dynamics among members of the family system. The different forms of family therapy share systems thinking. You are encouraged to imagine how concepts from this approach may be useful in counseling for families and individual clients. You are also encouraged to read the seminal works and the original writings of the postmodern and family system theories’ founders to deepen your understanding of these theories, particularly if you plan to practice them in your practicum experience and post-graduate internship.
