Objectives: To design a “super-soaker” type of device that will spray a stream of water a minimum of 10 feet (~ 3 meters). The unit should be constructed of plastic material (PVC or 3D printed). There also needs to be some electronics involved that control the operation of the device.

Teams: You may work in a team of up to 3 people.

Weight: 30% of your course grade.

Documents: Complete documentation expected at completion of project (i.e. Project proposal, CAD diagram(s), Flowcharts, BOM, any other relevant material)

Presentation: PowerPoint or equivalent.

Project Guidelines:

The goal of the project must be an electronic or electromechanical device that reflects either the BS.EET or BS.ELM program within the ECET department. Additionally:

1) The project must be designed so as to accomplish the assigned task in a manner that reflects the spirit of the assignment. The design must be innovative in either form, fit or function. In other words it must go above and beyond what is normally covered in the standard program courses (ie. it must be more than a standard laboratory assignment.

2) At least half of the electronic/electromechanical device must be designed, with some calculations or other research whereby the student(s) arrive at a specific plan, package, device, or circuit. The ‘design’ may include elements of circuit construction, software programming, packaging, mechanics, green engineering, and/or power consumption and include elements from two major disciplines: Analog, Digital, Micro, Power, Controls, and Communications. Note: using a design straight out of a textbook or online project is not permitted unless sufficiently modified or adapted to fit the project. Students must identify that part(s) of the project that required significant design work.

3) Use some “pre-built” parts in their project but must identify them as such. This would include any “evaluation” circuit boards, power supplies, motors, transmitters, interfaces, etc.

4) Propose a project outside of the above guidelines, such as a work project, provided that the instructor signs off on the project (ie. approves the project) ahead of time.

5) Projects will be evaluated using the following criteria:

• The overall design of the project including integration of concepts learned

• Innovation and creativity

• Technical understanding

• Operation

• Testing and evaluation

• Construction

6) Provide documentation including but not limited to engineering design notes, concept drawings, calculations, specifications, Bill-of-Materials (BOM), Gantt chart, schedules, and a written report. In addition students will be asked to present final and intermediate reports to the instructor(s) and peers for review.
