Question
A dilute aqueous Sodium Hypochlorite solution (NaCIO) is used to absorb Nitric oxide (NO) in a packed bed filled with 25-mm plastic Tellerettes. The packing factor for 25-mm plastic Tellerettes is 40 ft2/ft3. The gas inlet contains 3% volume/volume of NO in air. 94% of NO has to be removed from the gas before discharge to atmosphere. The reaction of Nitric Oxide with Sodium Hypochlorite in liquid is very fast such that the concentration of NO in liquid phase can be assumed to be zero.
1) Estimate the packing height required given that the height of an overall gas transfer unit HOG is 4 ft. 2) The column is operated at 25 °C, 1 atm. and 65% flooding. Determine the column diameter if the gas mass rate is 25,000 lb/h and the liquid rate is 75,000 IB/h. Physical properties of the water and air could be used to approximate those of the gas and liquid stream in the column. 3) Estimate the approximate gas pressure drop over the packed bed.
