Writing an essay of three to five pages offering and validating your opinion on a topic relating the Greek primary sources.
The goal of this assignment is encourage you to read the sources on Greece analytically and then to develop some of the information you learned into an essay on one of four topics relating to religion, social order, political life, and culture. You are asked to interpret the sources and not just repeat their content as you present your ideas in essay form. Make use of the material in the textbook but do not repeat it or quote it as part of your essay. Using the primary source in Backman, Sources for Cultures of the West pages 41-68, answer one of the following questions in proper essay form:
- Based on your reading of the sources, how would you describe life in Greece? Include an assessment of positive and negatives aspects to the lives of the Greeks.
- In what ways do the sources inform you about the society of classical Greece? Do you think that individualism was important to the Greeks?
- With the sources as the basis for your view, describe the Greek perception of religion and philosophy.
