This paper should be 2-3 pages in length, in essay format (introduction, body and conclusion) typed with font Times New Roman size 12. Please see the Assignments Page for a more complete description of required information. [4 points]

Your tasks will be: Using the two documents assigned –

1) Introduce your thesis: which writer’s ideas and attitudes would find more acceptance and understanding by the majority of Americans today.[2 points]

2) Place the documents written by Rousseau and Wollstonecraft in their larger historical context- the political and intellectual ideas of the era in which they composed these writings. [2 points]

3) According to Rousseau: What, in his view, are the man’s responsibility as husband and father? What are the woman’s responsibility as wife and mother? How does he view the relationship between men and women? What, according to Rousseau, is the root cause of gender inequality? Are Rousseau’s arguments convincing? Does he support his arguments with evidence and logic? What do you think he means when he refers to “nature?” [3 points]

4) Wollstonecraft: To what extent does Mary Wollstonecraft’s view of women and their place in society concur with Rousseau’s view; Does she see women “comfortable” with Rousseau’s justification for women’s role in society or does she offer an alternative, Explain. According to Wollstonecraft, who and what is responsible for women’s “discontent”? What is her argument for gender equality? Is Wollstonecraft’s argument convincing? Why or why not? [3 points]

Cite any sources you use – it should be clear in your paper whether you are using words from your text (Perry,) or Rousseau or Wollstonecraft.

5) Don’t forget a conclusion paragraph: have you carried your thesis/argument throughout the paper [2 points]
