Stage I: Project Proposal
Purpose: Almost every job, requires you to write proposals, or deliver a pitch, before embarking on a project or before being given the permission to do a project. The benefit of writing the proposal, for yourself,is to provide a structure that will allow you to organize, research to ensure quality, focus, plan ahead, make efficient use of your time, anticipate challenges, get inspiration and develop strategies. The benefit it has, for your audience, is that they understand your ideas and trust that they are clear, inspired, innovative and likely to deliver a good result. If you have a good proposal, you will be able to reuse it (even copy paste parts of it! ) in your presentation and solution/reflection due later in the term.
Directions:
1) After you have met with your group and you have all settled on a particular problem or nation of focus, you as an individual will need to find your own particular focus within that area decided upon by the group. To decide, it may be helpful to think of Appadurai’s scapes. Which scape would you like to explore? Research is best when you choose a topic that genuinely interests you. Some examples of possible topics are, but are not limited to, the following: injustice or discrimination toward a particular group of people, labor or resource shortages, unemployment, problems resulting from migration, internal conflicts over a particular cultural practice, custom, religion, politics, entertainment, social media, etc.; a conflict with another country or civil war, post-colonialism, problems resulting from consumerism or Americanization; terrorism, fundamentalism, etc. Whatever you choose, you must focus on the cultural aspects of the problem. For example, if you’re looking at the growing number of children not being immunized against measles in the United States, your research should not focus on the science behind the disease or vaccinations, but rather on the cultural reasons for the problem.

2) After you have decided on a problem, read (3) reliable sources published from 1980-to the present to develop your understanding of the problem. Your sources must include:
a. (2)sources,a book, or e-book or book chapter, or article from AUD’s library or from the following AUD databases: Academic Search Complete, CQ Researcher, GreenFILE, JSTOR, LexisNexis Academic, Taylor and Francis, Video from Kanopy. I’ve bolded those that are particularly useful for research in the humanities.
b. (1) sourcefrom any of the above or .edu, .org, or .gov website (excluding Wikipedia.org)
c. Feel free to use more than the 3 required sources if you like

3) Project Proposal (approximately 900 words):
a. Content:
Part I. Summarize (this part should take up approximately half of your proposal)what you learned from your research about the problem taking into account the following: To what degree has culture contributed to or alleviated the problem? To what extent has globalization contributed to or alleviated the problem? What are the various challenges that exist with regard to solving this particular problem? Finally, whom does your research lead you to empathize with and why? Be sure to both paraphrase and quote your research, with in-text citations, so that you are including summaries and specifics—being specific, or quoting, the parts that are most important to you.

Part II. Describe the innovative creative/entrepreneurial solution that you intend to develop and how and why it will contribute in some way to solving the problem/situation. (Remember, creating something that helps to spread awareness, or to make marginalized people and their problems visible in such a way that others care about them, in essence, advocating for them, counts as a “solution,” since such action does contribute to still more effective solutions). What does the finished product look like in your imagination? Describe how you would like it to be in as much detail as you can. Describe how your project will specifically address the cultural challenges and complexities you learned about in your research.

i. Describe the audience/customer (it will be fine if it’s just our class) you are addressing in your project. Is it a particular group of people of that particular region? Is it people here? The international community at large?

ii. Describe the challenges you anticipate facing in your development of the project in order for it to live up to what is in your imagination, as well as what difficulties your solution is likely to encounter, in terms of the nation’s authorities, or other people that might not agree with you.How to you plan to solve these challenges?
iii. Finally, how will the skills or perspectives you’ve gained through your education in your major, or in your life experience, help you to design your solution?

b. Bibliography: Your proposal must include a Works Cited Page documenting your sources in MLA format.

c. Formatting: This proposal must be submitted in MLA Manuscript Format, which means that it should have 1-inch top, bottom, right and left margins; be double-spaced and set in 12pt. Times New Roman font.
*Here are some possible types of solutions: a product to sell or donate, a blog or webpage, an architectural plan, a poem, editorial, memoir or creative nonfiction piece, a film, video or podcast; a painting, sculpture, photograph or mural; a work of music, choreography, play, performance art, a pitch for an event; etc. Whatever your solution, it should take no more than five minutes to present, so for example, it’s a video, it should be no longer than 5 minutes long.
