I chose this topic as it is very important when it comes to respiratory care. We need to be able to identify triggering factors that is affecting airway or breathing. One of the biggest trigger that is compromising breathing are psychological or strong emotions that the person is exhibiting. They are in such emotional distress that they often forget the ability to breath and quality of their breathing pattern.

This article explored the emotional factors such as anxiety and depression among patients who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that are remarkably common among this population. The presence of these risk factors are associated to increase exacerbation rates, decrease quality of life, longer hospital stays and mortality. Treatment options that can help includes relaxation, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), self management, and pharmacological interventions. Successful and effective treatment of anxiety and depression in patients with COPD enhances their quality of life and management of their disease.
