Examine representations of gender over time and place in order to learn about gender norms and roles, social status, and perceptions of beauty. The sources are online exhibits at many museums and websites. I did a wide-ranging google search of virtual exhibitions, so this is a random sampling.
In this assignment, view exhibits on three of the sites provided below. Examine representations of women as well as presentations of gender. Some of the sites also address race. Identify a theme (bodies, gendered roles – such as motherhood, fashion, race and relationships with white women, body and identity). The way you approach the themes is up to you. What do you see when you look at the images? What was the artist attempting to convey about womanhood, gendered relationships, female bodies and sexuality? How are women posed? How are they touched?
