COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course examines population health from an epidemiologic and public health perspective. Concepts and methods are applied to managerial decision-making in the delivery of healthcare services to address community/population health issues. An evidence-based and data driven approach is used to explore the determinants of health and assess the health status and healthcare needs of populations. The role of healthcare organizations in the development of intervention strategies to improve quality and delivery of health services in the community is explored.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Apply epidemiologic and population health concepts to managerial decision making.
Assess relevant data sources to propose appropriate intervention strategies for current population/community health issues.
Describe the basic concepts and principles of epidemiology and public health.
Differentiate sources of quantitative and qualitative data and their use in monitoring population health at the local, state and national levels.
Examine health disparities, determinants of health, and the occurrence of disease in populations.

Reflection on Population Health Course

Throughout this course on population health from an epidemiologic and public health perspective, I have encountered several compelling topics that have significantly enhanced my understanding of healthcare delivery and community health issues. One of the most impactful topics was the examination of health disparities and the social determinants of health. Understanding how factors such as socioeconomic status, education, and access to healthcare can influence health outcomes has deepened my appreciation for the complexities involved in managing population health. This topic highlighted the need for targeted interventions that address the root causes of health inequities rather than merely treating symptoms.
